Recent reads

Happy Tuesday friends! I wanted to share with you a couple of books I recently read, both of which actually came about because the authors began the stories on their blogs. Chances are, you've probably heard of both of these books and perhaps even read them, but I wanted to give you my honest review of each. So here goes.

The first is Bloom, by Kelle Hampton. I've been a blog reader of hers for a little over a year now, and I'll admit that it's one of my faves. She is so incredibly open and honest about her 'everyday' life and happenings and her beautiful writing paired with her awesome photog skills is simply captivating. I want more each time, and so I go back again and again. Pure lovliness.

The book is about her journey of (unexpectedly) having a child with Down syndrome and the highs and lows she experienced as a result of it in the first year of her daughter's life. I was moved to tears, several times actually, in the first chapter of the book where she recounts Nella's birth story. Her honesty is what I found to be so refreshing. In a blogosphere where many only paint the 'pretty' pictures + stories of their life, she openly says that she was heartbroken and felt that, in a way, the world had come crashing down. The chapters that follow tell of her growth and acceptance and eventual celebration of her sweet Nella and while I do not have a child with special needs, this book truly speaks to any mother who has brought a child into the world in circumstances that were not expected and perhaps, not ideal.

There are pictures sprinkled throughout the book so that it reads just like a series of blog entries. Pics of her family and friends and precious snapshots of her children are included to complement and give visuals to her beautiful words. Perhaps one of the things that stuck with me the most was her core group of friends she calls the 'Net'. These ladies were there for her in the hospital and along every step of the journey, just as if a trumpet had been sounded to rally them to duty. It caused me to think about my own friends- yes we have moments too where we come together to support and encourage one another, but are we truly being a Net? Are we holding each other up and even carrying each other if one of us can't stand? Yes, we pray for each other, but seeing the way her friends were truly there for her made me want to step it up and be that kind of friend. Know what I mean? A Net is always a good thing to have close at hand, not just in case it's needed, but because it will be needed.

Sorry-didn't really mean for that to take a deep turn, so let's now move from deep thoughts to horse troughs.

Do horses use troughs?

I don't know.

The second book is all about passionate love and out-of-control flop sweat and squirty manure and if you guessed already just from that list of adjectives that I'm describing From Black Heels to Tractor Wheels, well then you must read The Pioneer Woman. The book tells the story of how Ree met and fell in love with her cowboy husband and also recounts their first year of marriage together. She began telling her love story in installments on her blog, and over the course of 18 months, her readers were treated to chapter after chapter of her courtship, engagement, and marriage. For the book, she went beyond the wedding and finishes just after they celebrate their first year as husband and wife. If you know Ree's writing, then you know what a fun, quick read this was. I wasn't a blog reader yet when she began telling the stories online, so most of it was new to me and I ate it up. Not only did I find her true tales of courtship incredibly entertaining, but I was also immediately inspired to begin recording my own tale of love + marriage, including the first time I laid eyes on the hubs. I remember it well- I was at church, headed to the choir room for elementary choir when I saw him with the preschool class. His blue striped tank, blue shorts, and white knee socks with the velcro tennis caught my eye. He was four and I was....not.

Anyway, if you're on the lookout for a good read or two, I highly recommend these two books. I don't even have time for pleasure reading, but I wanted to read these so badly that I gave up some of my precious sleep and at one point, read on my stomach on the floor while my 2 yr-old sat on my back singing, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".

I hope you have a mahvelous morning/afternoon/evening, friends. Toodles!

So I met the Pioneer Woman

She's pretty.
So so pretty.
And gracious, and down-to-earth, and funny, and intelligent, and pretty, and witty, and just so so pretty.

There we are,
Ree and me.
I'm trying desperately to keep my composure and not say something stupid.
I babbled.
A lot.
I may have even said, "I worried all day that I'd say something stupid..."
I thanked her for coming to Alabama.
I thanked her for taking the time away from her kiddos to meet with crazed fans, like myself.
She liked my top.
She told me that one day she hoped to be brave enough to wear sleeveless.
She said I looked pretty.
That's when I wet myself.
Just a lil' bit.
I talked to Ree, y'all.

And, as if it weren't a big enough deal just to meet her, guess who else just so happened to gotten off of the elevator with her...

Allow me to give you the play-by-play since I was the crazy fan positioned on the other side of the doors just waiting to catch the first glipse of her as she got off and began her presentation. Picture me, stalking waiting patiently in front of those elevator doors, camera in one hand, phone in the other, in a slightly crouched position so as not to get pushed over or shoved outta my spot or anything. (I said I didn't want to SAY anything stupid, nevermind looking it...)

And then, the doors opened.
(these are a bit blurry, but they were in motion...)

See? Not kidding about stalking those doors. And do you SEEEE who that is in the plaid? It's totally Kevin of Kevin & Layla of the Lettered Cottage. Behind Kev (I call him Kev since we're BFF's now) was Ree...

and behind Ree was Layla of Kevin & Layla of the Lettered Cottage. I read their blog everyday as well, so you can imagine the puddle that formed when those doors opened.

And then, guess what?
Kev and Layla hung out by me during Ree's presentation.
Yup.
We're pals.

And Ree?
Well she gave one heckuva power-point presentation which she said would be a very brief summary of how she became The Pioneer Woman. It began like this...

and this...

and even after stating that she feels incredibly awkward and uncomfortable talking in front of large groups, she had, within an instant, captured all of us with her story-telling skills. I snapped about 472 more pics of her in front of the screen before remembering that my point-and-shoot is also a video camera.

and then, she sang.
To her dog.

After her fabulous presentation, they made us line up by number and thanks to my friend Brittni who went to BAM the previous day and picked up lucky #27, we were near the front of a massive crowd of Ree fans. See em?

After waiting in line and chatting and taking more photos, it was our turn.

There I am.
Babbling like an idiot.

There's Brittni and PW.
Thank you thank you Brittni for getting a number and for seeing my post about going to meet her and for letting us stand in line at #27 and not #338.

My friend, Cyndi, who's also a huge PW fan and who also offered to let me ride with her to the Ham.
Thank you thank you, Cyndi.
I had a blast last night and thanks to you, I didn't have to drive myself there which would've resulted in me getting lost 8 times and missing the whole shebang.

Brittni's friend, Jennifer, and her sweet lil' Anna with PW.

And then, my newest BFF's, Kevin and Layla, agreed to take a pic with me and my craziness.

And pictured below?
Well I just so happened to also meet Katherine of Grass Stains and Shaunna of Perfectly Imperfect.
What a night, y'all.

And just when I think I've made it through the evening without making a total fool of myself, Layla suggests we take a funny pic too,
and my crazy comes out...

if that wasn't enough to make you need some depends,
I did it again...

And that, my friends, was the end of an awesome evening.

Huge thanks also go to my mum who watched my kiddos last night.
Thank you thank you, mum.

Happy Thursday to ya!

Pioneer Woman comes to AL and a funny video

Yup.
She'll be comin' round the moutain when she comes.
The Queen of blogdom herself, Ree Drummond, aka The Pioneer Woman, will be in the fair city of Birmingham tonight to sign her new cookbook. The very same cookbook that I happened to have purchased for myself on Saturday.
Yup.
That Ree Drummond.

A huge thanks to my friend, Cyndi, for telling me about the book signin' in the first place and for offering me a ride! We're gonna hop over to the ham a few hours early and hope the line to meet her isn't like Wal-mart on Black Friday. Will any of you locals be there? Are any of you as worried as I am about being a blubbering idiot in front of the Pioneer Woman. Do any of you love her movie trivia games as much as I do? Or her salsa? Or, good heavens,
 her iced coffee?
Sheesh she's fab.
Here's hoping we actually get to meet her and get our books signed instead of being disappointed because 2,345,623 people showed up. I'll be posting updates on twitter for any inquiring minds...

And since I'm now sounding a bit like a 'crazed' fan instead of just a 'fan', I'll stop and change directions entirely.

Tonight, after a lovely birthday dinner with my family at the tree table of Iguana Grill, a moth flew in the door with us upon our return home.
This is what followed:

p.s.sorry for the snorting...

Happy Wednesday Friends!

A hodge-podge, April 2012 edition

First things first...
I am now 32 years young.
If hubs were here, he'd be quick to tell you that for the next 2 months, I'm five years older than he is.
Not four.
Funny hubs.
I spent the majority of Saturday afternoon strolling the aisles of Sam's with my girls- looking at books and movies, printing pictures, and of course sampling free food.

I promise that MM was happier than she looks. She's just upset because she ate her sample of french fries and wanted more. I'm holding a sample of stuffed salmon that was deeee-lish and we'd already consumed some crackers with garlic & herb cream cheese, cookies and cream chex mix, ham, fruit, and pizza.

Thank you Sams, from the bottom of my heart, for the free and well-balanced meal last Saturday. You totally rock.

And since it was my birthday, I treated myself to a couple new books. They weren't free, but Ree's latest cookbook retails for $30 and Sams sells it for $18. The Hunger Games People issue was also 30% off, so again, I say to you,
 Sams-
thank you for the bangin' good deals on these books.
I really appreciate it.

These also jumped into my cart.
Because they wanted to come home with me and live in my dining room along with the other white ceramic pretties there. These babies were a mere $30 for all 3, and THAT, my friends, you cannot beat with a stick. Do you hear me?
Not even a really big one.

I spent several hours of my weekend photographing products that I made for my shop's open house but never got around to listing online. I took photos of 68 products and stayed up til 12:30 am this morning after having only listed 10. Good GRAVY it takes a while, but, if you'd like to see what's new in the shop, click HERE. Mainly pillow covers & a few headbands with lots more to come as soon as I find a few extra hours...

In the past 2 weeks, we've sold a bed, night stand, bookcase, and changing table. Needless to say, we're making some ch-ch-ch-changes and I'm hoping to be able to share them soon. Still looking for one elusive piece of furniture to bring it all together...

***

For those of you interested, these are the new Matilda Jane pieces that are available as of yesterday-

For information on how to order, see THIS post, or simply contact me. I'll be glad to help ya.
*There are also 2 new adult pieces that will be available by mid-April but are currently stuck in customs I believe. It's a super cute tank & skirt, just FYI.*

***

I think that's all the news that is the news,
and-
if you follow me on twitter or instagram, thanks for all the congrats,
but,
I'm totally not prego.
It was a Taco Casa baby and it was also April 1st.
I blame hubs and his shenanigans for rubbing off on me.

Happy April 2nd to ya!
