thrifty finds...

before I get to the vintage goodies I picked up today, allow me to share with you what my kiddos did as they waited for the oven to preheat, and then cook our dinner...

Eliza ran circles around the kitchen with her blanket flying high above her head while Oliver rolled around on the floor, and.... then she decided she would join him and roll as well.
(glad the floors are clean)
E ate half of her pizza with the oven mitt on her hand.

and O named the percussion instruments he's learning about with his super-cool music teacher at school.

MM just likes to watch the craziness.

there was a slight casualty tonight. E decided she didn't really like this book she found in O's room. Perhaps because she realized it was all about an elephant with the same name as her brother and had absolutely nothing to do with her. (fear not though. to be fair, I quickly pulled out my copy of Pygmalion and she loved it)

Now, onto my super fab and super-dee-duper thrifty vintage finds. On the way home from school today, O and I stopped at the little antique shop located next to Circlewood Baptist Church. We pass it everyday on our way to and from school and I used to occasionally stop in every now and then, but it had been years since I'd been inside. This is what I picked up today:

1. DVD of Veggie Tales The Star of Christmas - $3
2. DVD of Somewhere in Time- $2
(if you've never seen this, please don't tell me. It's just that it's so good it would probably make me cry knowing you'd never seen it, like the time my aunt told me she'd never seen The Sound of Music
3. DVD of The Women- (brand new, never opened) $3 (this is a re-make of a film from the 40's starring lots of my favorite actresses from that time. Don't know if this new version is any good, but I'll risk 3 bucks to find out.)
4. marble horse head bookend- $1.8
5. small pink/white china saucer- .23 cents
6. Better Homes and Gardens magazine from Dec of 1960- .80 cents
7. Children's Old Testament from 1923- .80 cents
8. other vintage book
(can't recall the name just now and it's all the way in another room. I can't be bothered to get up)- .80 cents
Now, you might be wondering, "just what are you going to do with that stuff?"
I'm so glad you asked.
Let's start with the little china saucer/dish. I'd been wanting something for my night stand that could hold my jewelry/ponytail holders and I thought it would be perfect. It looked a bit grimy when I found it:

but after a quick scrub to half of it, it was looking much better. (and yes, the price tag does say .25, but it came from a booth that was having a 25% off sale on all its merchandise. Boy am I glad. Don't know if I could have sprung for it at full price)

And, this is what's on the bottom, FYI. Don't have a clue what it means, but I plan to Google it and look on ebay to see if i can find out anything about it. Maybe it's a big deal. Who knows...

And here it is in it's new home on my night stand. I always end up with a couple pairs of earrings and some ponytail holders all over the top, and eventually clean it off and put them back in my jewelry case, but....until then, this is a nice little spot for them to live. In a cute little dish that was a whopping .23 cents.

Next, onto the horse head. It was a whole $2, but was also 20% off. It's real marble, and I happen to like marble, horses, AND I have a ton-o-books, so.....
I grabbed him up. Doesn't he look good on my shelf next to War and Peace?

Here's the title page of the little blue vintage book, The Saviour King. It says that it's a children's book about "the life of our Lord Jesus Christ", and the copyright date is sometime in the 1920's. (Again, it's all the way in another room and I just can't be bothered to get up and look for the actual year. Sufficient to say- it's OLD).

And here's the copyright of the other book- 1908. Couldn't believe it was in such great shape to be that old. And for .80 cents?? You betcha.

Here's the cover of The Saviour King. Pretty, huh?
And, the Better Homes and Gardens mag from 1960 had such fabulous ads that I just had to share some with you:

(what goes around, truly does come around. Rosettes are everywhere now- on headbands, lapel pins, bags/purses, and people have even started making wreaths out of them. Who knew they were also making rosettes like that in 1960?)
And a treat came in the mail today that I ordered from etsy. This adorable onesie with the vintage Barbie silhouette is from etsy seller, Suburban Grafitti. Just in case you didn't know, I love all things Barbie. Especially vintage Barbie.

And what's not to love about these sweet ruffles on the bum?
One last pic of the kiddos.
I call this one, "Tearing up the room".
Goodnight all.

the girl loves her some shoes...

I can never resist taking pictures of E when she tries on our shoes. It happens all. the. time. but...
it's just too stinkin cute.
I also think it reminds me of when I used to do this with my parents shoes.

There once was a little girl named Eliza Jean.
She liked to wear grown-up shoes.

She would wear daddy's shoes... and mommy's shoes.
Sometimes, she just liked to sit amongst them.

She would sit,
and sit,
and sit.

And when she tired of sitting amongst the shoes, she decided she would roll around with her blanket.

Sometimes she would say, "night-night".
As her mommy was taking pictures of her adventures with the shoes, her baby sister was doing this....
and so her mommy did this.....

and all was well again.
The End.
(night night)

Target love

I was a terrible picture taker today. No WIWW post. (what i wore wednesday) The hubs is sick. Maybe his sickness has gotten me out of sorts as well. Ah well..... onto the awesomeness that is...

TARGET.

One of my 'happy' places. Do you have a happy place? I could roam around in Target for hours (and often do) and never tire of the seemingly endless aisles of inspiration. Tonight though, I was on a mission. Cold meds for the hubs, poptarts and treat bags for O, and of course I had to look at these.... I mean, they're 75% off. Who wouldn't want a costume that's practically free? I bought 4 fab costumes for my kiddos that will be Christmas gifts and quite possibly be on their little bodies come next Halloween. Didn't take pics of them though. See what I mean? I was out of sorts today. They'll just be a surprise....

Also had to take a look at all that Halloween decor that they're almost PAYING you to take out of the store. See those fab black and white pillows to the right of the pic? I scored one of those for $3. And they're black and white striped on the opposite side. That's right. Pretty fab.
I did happen to take a pic of one of the cutest costumes I saw. One of the blogs I read had pics of a little cutie dressed in this....
too bad it wouldn't work for any of my crew.

Came across these eric carle party plates/napkins tonight. See what I mean about Target? Pure goodness on every aisle. How cool would a Very Hungry Caterpillar birthday party be? The party food could be the stuff he eats through in the book. (note to self: keep in mind for MM's 1st b'day party)

For VIP week (see my previous post for more info on this) Oliver gets to take one of his favorite story books for Mrs. Williams to read tomorrow and on Friday, gets to take a treat to his classmates. Talk about a score- I raided the leftover Halloween goodies and found some jars of bubbles (4 cents a piece) and some playdough (10 cents a piece). Throw in a pack of Toy Story 3 gummies (15 cents a piece) and we've got treat bags for an entire class that came out at 29 cents a pop. Not too shabby, my friends. Not too shabby.

MM has just fallen asleep beside me and my contacts are stuck to my eyeballs. I think it's bedtime. Here's hoping the hubs is feeling better in the morning.

Halloween pics........finally

our weekend was busy busy busy. Lots of fun activities packed into a short time. Our church's Fall Festival was saturday night. Oliver dressed as a Clone trooper, Eliza was Princess Leia, and MM wore her big sis's fairy costume with tutu. The weather was absolutely perfect. Wonderful evening with wonderful friends.

Here's Oliver in his favorite thing of the night.....the bouncy, jumpy things. (do they have an actual name?) on the hayride.....
(thank you Kara, for watching my clone trooper)
after the hot dog....ketchup on the nose

Eliza's favorite game was Pick Up Duck. She kept them after she picked them up though.

This is where MM hung out all night. She loved watching everything from here. She ate and even went to sleep in it. Precious girl.

Halloween the next night-
Oliver wanted to be Ironman. He already had the costume. Awesome.
Princess Leia was in the wash, so......Clay tried a few others on E, who wasn't really in the mood to try on costumes, and finally found a princess dress that fit. (whew) MM decided she would be a banana.
Here's O in a super-cool Ironman pose:

O and E got new toothbrushes from black mawmaw. (for those of you who don't know, this is what they call my MIL) Oliver's just happened to be an Ironman toothbrush. He brushed his teeth as SOON as we got home.

my sweet MM. (we had a monkey costume that was just a wee bit too small for E, but seriously...how cute would it have been for the girls to be a monkey and a banana??)

I promised pics of Clay's pumpkin, so here it is. Pretty awesome, huh?

All 3 with aunt MalMal

Now, ....onto more recent happenings:
Oliver is the VIP in his class this week which means each day, he will get to share something about himself with the class. Monday, all of the kids take a t-shirt (which starts out as a piece of posterboard) with pictures of their family, activities they enjoy, favorite toys, etc. Here's Oliver posing with his shirt before leaving for school Monday morning.

Last night I had a PTO concert with my first graders. They did an AWESOME job. SO proud of them. And don't they look fab in their sparkly gold hats and bow ties?
(yes. yes they do)

And today.....
I voted.
Did you?
I just watched the acceptance speech of our new Governor-elect, Dr. Robert Bentley.
He began his speech by thanking God.
What a blessing.
I have no doubt that God has mighty plans for Dr. Bentley.
Proud to be an Alabamian.

oh what a day....

yesterday was perhaps the longest day ever.
went to bed LATE Sunday night making a project for Oliver,
woke up EARLY yesterday to finish.
long day of teaching, and a concert last night.
150 gold, sequined top hats. they rocked.
halloween pictures coming soon. and fall festival.
they also rocked.
looking forward to seeing the hubs at lunch today.
he's coming to eat with O.
he's also bringing me coffee.
oh, how I love him.
