SOPA and PIPA

Hello friends-

if you're not already aware, big changes are ahead for the internet as we know it. Many sites are going dark today in protest of these possible changes. If you're not familiar with SOPA and PIPA,

then take a look at this:

If any of you can shed more light on this, I'd love to hear what you know.  From what I've read, it seems all we can do now is write to our state Senator. Is that right?
It kinda looks like a lot of the sites we use everyday, including blogs like mine, could be shut down.
